The Cape Cod  style  that  originated  in the American colonies is not as easily definable as the Saltbox. The Cape Cod cottage is a very simple, rectangular structure comprised of one story with a steeply pitched roof that facilitates development of the attic cavity at the second floor level. The Cape Cod style is very simple and the room arrangement varies greatly in size and interior layout.

Shingle style residences did not become a popular architectural design until the late 1800s. The Shingle style home is distinctly different from its colonial predecessors in New England. Shingle style homes are characteristically large and rambling houses. They vary in

volume and design and often comprise an enormous structure. This distinctly American style of architecture acquired its name from the unique application of shingle material used as exterior siding.
