The Saltbox structure is typically two stories in front transitioning to only one story at the rear. From the ridge, the roof slants forward at a dramatic angle and has an elongated slope to the rear that resembles the shape of the old salt boxes made during the Colonial period. The Saltbox style is not exclusively American, as it was also popular in England like many other early American architectural styles.
