When the New England region of North America was first settled by the pilgrims, the architectural designs they employed became the indigenous style of the area. New England style homes have very distinct forms and unique designs. The Saltbox home and the Cape Cod cottage are two Colonial styles that were built almost exclusively in the early settlements of the New England area. The Shingle style, a later design development, became popular in New England during the late 1800s.
