The selection of a preferred architec- tural style for your new home can strongly influence the massing and arrangement of

the spaces that constitute the floor plan. All perimeter rooms of the home have window and door openings, known as fenestration, that form penetrations in the exterior walls. Therefore, the place- ment of perimeter doors and windows from the inside must be responsive to the relationship these openings share with the organization of the exterior design of your home. For example, a typical two-story New England Colonial home is generally comprised of two rectangular floors that are identical in size and shape. This style of home would be very difficult to accomp- lish if the building program called for the majority of the interior spaces to be located on the first floor: e.g., the master bedroom suite, kitchen, dining room, living room, study, foyer and utility area.
