The four sided addition is shaped like an octagon that's been cut in half and wrapped in glass. Because this home is located in the South, heat loss through the fixed glazing isn't a problem in winter. And in summer, a ceiling fan helps dispel warm air through French doors that lead to the pool. The solarium, which actually serves as a den, provides an extra 400 square feet of living space. The addition is adjacent to the dining room and break- fast nook on the first floor and bed- rooms on the second floor. A hall with a balcony railing was added along the existing wall so that people in the up- per-level bedrooms could enjoy the view into and through the den. Access to the upper-level bedrooms is provided by a freestanding circular staircase. On the lower level, the old house wall has been completely refurbished. The new center of attention is a marble fire- place set in a mirrored wall that's flanked with built-in storage units. Shelves on both sides of the chimney on the second level provide extra storage space. ![]() |
